A la hora de elegir la universidad en la que queremos estudiar en los Estados Unidos, una de las cosas que muchas veces se pasa por alto, y es un tema muy importante, es la acreditación de esos estudios para otras instituciones educativas en EEUU y para las empresas.

El gobierno de los Estados Unidos no regula ni controla la calidad de los programas educativos que ofrecen las universidades en USA. Para ello se valen de lo que se conoce como “Agencias de Acreditación” (“Accrediting Organizations”)

Las “agencias de acreditación” son una serie de empresas homologadas por el Departamento de Educación de los Estados Unidos para que marquen los estándares mínimos de calidad exigibles, y para revisar que centros educativos cumplen dichos estándares.

Cuando una universidad cumple con los estándares marcados se dice que esta “acreditada” por dicha organización.

Existen multitud de agencias de acreditación, y un “College” o una Universidad (si no conoces la diferencia entre “College” y “university” pincha aquí para conocerla) pueden estar acreditados solo por una de ellas o por varias a la vez. Además, existen “organizaciones profesionales” que acreditan no a los centros educativos , sino a un programa específico como puede ser el programa de ingeniaría.

Existen dos tipos de agencias de acreditación para acreditar  a los centros:

  • Agencias regionales: Los Estados Unidos están divididos a efectos de acreditación regional en seis regiones y cada región tiene su agencia.
  •  Agencias Nacionales: No actúan con criterios geográficos sino por el tipo de programa que ofrecen las instituciones educativas. En caso de que algún centro ofrezca un programa muy específico, este centro seria acreditado por una agencia nacional.

Es realmente importante a la hora de estudiar una Carrera en USA , elegir un centro (College o University) que esté acreditado por una agencia reconocida, ya que eso te garantiza que los estudios realizados serán reconocidos por otras universidades, en el caso de que, por ejemplo, quieras cambiar de universidad o realizar un master en otro centro educativo.

Por lo general y en la mayoría de los casos, las universidades acreditadas nacionalmente admiten la transferencia de créditos de universidades acreditadas regionalmente, no siendo tan común el caso a la inversa.También es importante a  la hora de buscar trabajo, ya que las empresas también tienen en cuenta la acreditación de la universidad donde has realizado los estudios, aunque este punto solo es importante en caso de buscar trabajo en los Estados Unidos, ya que las empresas en España no es algo que valoren en la mayoría de los casos.

La información de la acreditación de una universidad o de un programa específico suele venir en la web del centro o en los folletos informativos.

Ojo con qué agencias acreditan a algunos centros, ya que hecha la ley, hecha la trampa, y algunos centros crean sus propias agencias de acreditación, que tienen toda la apariencia de legales y que las utilizan para acreditar sus propios programas. A continuación, os facilitamos un listado con las agencias tanto regionales como nacionales más prestigiosas. Si encontráis que la universidad a la que estáis pensando asistir está acreditada por una de estas agencias, podéis estar tranquilos en cuanto al reconocimiento de vuestros estudios.
